Business and Economy

The role of the Business and Economic Group is to develop the town’s confidence and capability and to increase national and international awareness of Devizes as both a tourist and business destination. We aim to build on the area’s economic diversity and its ability to generate wealth for the community at large.

A clearly focused strategy is the key to meeting these objectives, underpinned by investment from private enterprise. We also aim to make good use of the vast business experience of those people who have retired to the Devizes area and have business experience to share.

The creation of a range of new high value jobs within the Area will enable future expansion to be genuinely employment led.  A thriving local economy will enable other actions to be put in place so that the area becomes more self-contained, where there are sufficient and suitable jobs to meet demand. A cogent plan will ensure that Devizes continues to grow as an attractive destination for business, residents and a centre for tourism.

We see the key ingredients for this economy as: -

  1. Growing tourism to make Devizes a popular destination.
In 2014 we helped Devizes achieve 'coach friendly' status and we are starting to see more coach tours visiting the town and bookings for 2015 are being confirmed at a higher rate than 2014.
  2. More highly achieving schools with stronger links to local business.
The highly successful mentoring scheme has seen 35 business in Devizes providing valuable mentoring to students from Devizes School.
  3. The creation of a rail link to London (ideal location identified as being at Lydeway).
We are still aspiring to this important transport link and the line electrification is hopefully going to help make this a reality in the not too distant future.
